Game Show Encyclopedia: Eye Guess

Eye Guess was a television game show ran from January 3, 1966 to September 26, 1969 on NBC. created by Bob Stewart and hosted by Bill Cullen.

2 contestants saw a 3X3=9 space game board on which 8 answers were revealed for 8 seconds and then hidden from view. The middle Eye Guess square remained blank. Players had to remember the location of the answers and match them by number to the questions asked by the host. A player could call for the Eye Guess box if he thought that the answer to the question was not among the eight revealed choices. Choosing an incorrect number for a question could yield some very funny results which was part of this simple show's appeal. One classic wrong answer was to a question, "Why did the people elect President Johnson in 1964?" Wrong answer: "To take away the garbage." There was total audience hysteria laughter and Bill Cullen quipped, "Yeah, that sounds like LBJ."

Each game consisted of two boards with correct answers worth 10 points on the first board and 20 on the second. 5 consecutive correct answers won that player a bonus prize. The first player to reach 100 points won the game. This was later changed to winning a prize for each correct answer with 7 being the winning score.

In the first bonus round from January 3 to January 14, 1966: the player had to match celebrities with their spouses and won a car if successful. Each match awarded $25. In the second bonus round January 17, 1966 to August 30, 1968: players called out numbers on a new board which concealed 7 prizes and a Stop sign. If the Stop sign was found, the player kept all prizes revealed up to that point. On September 2, 1968 to September 26, 1969: Players who uncovered all 7 prizes before finding the Stop sign won a super bonus prize (such as a new car). This was changed to finding seven "Go" signs before finding "Stop".

Bob Stewart is best known for creating The $10,000 Pyramid. In the early days of television he worked for Goodson-Todman Productions , for whom he developed such classics as Password, To Tell The Truth and the original version of The Price is Right. Eye Guess was his first show as an independent producer.

This series was one of many NBC daytime shows that fell victim to the network's 1978 videotape-recycling efforts. Only one full episode of Eye Guess (and part of another) is known to exist today. The complete episode is in the possession of GSN and has been shown on that network in the past.

The theme song used on the show was "Sugar Lips" by Al Hirt.
