Game Show & Co: all around the players
| Game Show Encyclopedia: The Better Sex |
The Better Sex was an television game show in the
United States where men competed against women in a "battle of the
sexes" format. The Mark Goodson-Bill Todman production ran on ABC
from July 18, 1977 to January 13, 1978. The show has two hosts, one male
and one female (just to keep things interesting); each one acted as a
leader to the team of the appropriate sex. The male host was veteran
country music singer "Whisperin" Bill Anderson, and the female
host was future Real People star Sarah Purcell. Gene Wood was the
announcer.
Main gameThe show pits two teams of six people (6 men & 6 women) in a battle of the sexes elimination format. This game combined elements of Family Feud & Hollywood Squares. One member of the team in control was asked a question (either general knowledge or survey). Then was handed a card, on the card was the correct answer & a bluff answer; the contestant's job is to choose which answer to use to fool the opposing team (the members of the opposite sex) with. After the contestant made his/her choice, up to three members of the opposing team decide to either agree or disagree on the answer. Only two can agree or disagree and once they did, the correct answer is then revealed. If the two players make an incorrect judgement they will have been fooled and they're knocked out of the game; but if they make a correct judgement, not only they stay in the game but the fooling player will be knocked out plus another member of the opposing team of their choice (if the latter happens, the correct judgement team gets control). The first team to eliminate the other team wins the game & $1,000 plus a chance to play for $5,000 in the bonus game. Bonus gameIn the bonus game, the winning team faces 30 members of the opposite sex in the studio audience. Each team member gets only one chance to knock out as many audience members as they can. As in the game & on his/her turn, one member of the team in control was asked a question, afterwhich was handed a card which has the correct answer only; if he/she can can use fine otherwise he/she can come up with a bluff. After the answer was given by the player, the audience members then vote to agree or disagree on the answer. After the correct answer is revealed, the audience members whom voted wrong were knocked out. Play continues until all six questions are played & if there any audience members left standing, the team loses & the survivors split $500, but if all 30 audience members is knocked out in six questions or less, the winning team splits $5,000. Teams stay on the show until they lose twice.
